Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America

Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America Review

Examining the millitary's own record, Nathaniel Frank makes the tight case that don't ask don't tell has ultimately undercut the military's effectiveness and readiness.

It plays into the agency's/Congress's stereotypes about who an effective solider is instead of seeing factual evidence. Meanwhile, ignoring the current policy, GLBT servicemembers (and those merely suspected of it) are rooted out, robbing the armed forces of much needed and highly trained personnel.

Were this not bad enough, to quickly fill in the gaps, they look to lesser qualified people with questionable backgrounds. But these people are ironically acceptable under the current policies because they are deemed straight. In an agency concerned about security, safety and quality, I'd actually think the new hirees would be more of a danger than GLBT servicemembers.

Throughout the book Frank himself makes the point that until don't ask, don't tell is overturned, we will have this absurd--and dangerous catch 22 policy. It is not about protecting the country or ensuring military preparedness. It is about appeasing deep rooted fears of military officials and Congressional leaders. The American public has a right to demand a qualified competend millitary.

Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America Overview

Drawing on more than a decade of research and hundreds of interviews, Nathaniel Frank exposes the military’s policy toward gays and lesbians as the damaging one that it is and demonstrates that “don’t ask, don’t tell” must be replaced with an outright reversal of the gay ban. One of the nation’s leading experts on gays in the military, Frank’s even-handed and always scrupulously documented chronicle shows how the ban on open gays and lesbians in the U.S. military has greatly increased discharges, hampered recruitment, and—contrary to the rationale offered by proponents of the ban—led to lower morale and cohesion within military ranks.

The author presents indisputable evidence showing that gays already serve openly in the U.S. military without causing problems, and that the policy itself is weakening the military it was supposed to protect. Part history, part exposé, and fully revealing, Unfriendly Fire is sure to make the blood boil of any American who cares about national security, the right to speak the truth, or just plain common sense and fairness.

Best Gay Erotica 2004 (Best Gay Erotica Series)

Best Gay Erotica 2004 (Best Gay Erotica Series) Review

I'd venture that this year's "Best Gay Erotica" is one of the best collections of erotica that I've read, and perhaps my favourite in the series to date. And I've read a lot of them.

You'd think that an anthology about gay sex would be mostly about fantasy (and there is a lovely fantasy story this year about the power to stop time...) but I think what I like most about this collection is the reality. Objects of attraction are hairy guys (lots of `em); bears (quite a few); young studs; a bisexual married man, older men (than the narrators); and older men in general. There's a whole ton of sweaty humping, a bit of oral, some role-playing, powerfully written S&M, protected and unprotected sex, and drug-taking. There's joy and reflection, nostalgia, and quite a bit of hard reality. There's eroticism found in hard-luck stories, a history of a tattoo, and confession. These are real stories about real men having real sex. Good for us.

I'm impressed that the editors, Kirk Read and Richard Labonté managed to put together a collection where I liked every story - and more so, was surprised by each of them: their tenderness, despair, joy, quirkiness, hardness, sweetness and reality. Think I'm gushing a little too much? Buy a copy yourself, and you'll see. I dare you.
